Um, handguns in Canada (house is in Lethbridge, Alberta) have been effectively illegal in Canada since 1936.

Only the police, military and target-shooters are allowed to have them. That and if the Mob is after you, you can apply to the RCMP to carry a concealed handgun (but they like, never hand those out).

If the homeowner is a cop or military officer, he'd be up on charges for the unsafe storage of a firearm. If he's a civilian target shooter, he'd lose his restricted firearms license and would face fines/jail time.
